Notes for Agnes Ligo
See the note on her husband’s identification and then bless the Scots habit of always giving the maiden name of spouses.
No baptism found for her from 1735 to 1755.
There is a second child of her name, in 1761, a Patrick to a Patrick Bartleman:
27/12/1761 BARTLEMAN PATRICK PATRICK BARTLEMAN/AGNES LIGO FR230 (FR230) M GLADSMUIR /EAST LOTHIAN 708/00 0010 0287

But from Family Search there are four births to a mother with the name of Agnes Ligo:
Birth date Child’s name Location County Father Mother
23 Dec 1761 Patrick Bartleman Gladsmuir East Lothian Patrick Bartleman Agnes Ligo
18 Sep 1764 Marion Barclayman North Berwick East Lothian Peter Barclayman Agnes Ligo
1 Apr 1767 George Barclayman North Berwick East Lothian Peter Barclayman Agnes Ligo
22 Aug 1771 William Bartleman Dirleton East Lothian Peter Bartleman Agnes Ligo
In those days not everyone could read and write and local accents were far more pronounced and distinctive than they are now. It may well be that the people entering the parish records had difficulty understanding what was said to them, they could not ask the adult to spell their name as he or she did not know that. So the questions about the above four births are;
1. Was ‘Agnes Ligo’ just one and the same mother?
2. Were the fathers all the same man?
3. What might we suppose the father’s name was?
4. Might it be that no-one knew what the father’s name was because it sounded so different to each hearer?
(Think of the “Fork Handles” sketch by the two Ronnies)
