Notes for Agatha Vernon
m. (1) Hugh Venables, (2) David de Hulgreve.
In the Venables article, Ormerod says they m. in 23 Ed I and she was the “daughter of Ralph Vernon, of Shipbrook, with whom he had lands , and services f tenants in Little Meons and Leyrton”. The problem is which Ralph was she the daughter of?
In the Vernon article, p. 252, Ormerod shows that Agaths was the daughter of Ralph vernon and Mary Dacre. But this Ralph is somewhat unbelievable through his claimed age of 150, see p. 248 note (b) and that his daughter Maud from his second marriage married Agatha’s grandson William Venables.
Ormerod, or rather Thomas Helseby the editor of the second edition, reckons that this Sir Ralph Vernon was born around 1220. This would put Agatha’s marriage in 1295 in Ralph’s 75th year and Maud’s marriage in 1344 when Ralph was 124! However the venables article says that Maud’s father was a Richard Vernon, which date might make more sense.
