Notes for Richard Lybbe
Martin P-L writes:

RICHARD, father of ISABELLA, son of RICHARD J.P. 1673-1722

1673   Whitchurch Baptism Register:
           "1673 Aug 6  LYBBE   Richard 2. Richard & Sophia"
1692 aged 19, matriculated at Trinity Hall;  1696  B.A. from St John's
1694 apparently owned half of Manor of Blackmuston on Isle of Purbeck (PL XVII d 1)
1699 student of Inner Temple  (Foster's Inns of Court Register)
1712 High Sheriff of Oxon.  (like his great grandfather).
1713 at Somerset House chapel (since destroyed) married Isabella, daughter of Sir Wm. and Dame Frances Twysden of Royden Hall, East Peckham, Kent.
Sir William was mentioned in connection with James II's repeal of the Test Act (v. Ashley's James II, and G.F.Duckett's Penal Laws, Test Act, vol.1, pp.354 & 364, published in 1863.)
They [she, rather; Sir Wm died in 1697 - TFPL] presumably came to live with them, for she gave a plate to Whitchurch in 1725.  AP-L has portraits of the two Twysdens and of their son, Heneage, who was killed at Malplaquet and buried in Westminster Abbey.  Sir William [the younger - TFPL] became the godfather of his grandson [nephew, rather - TFPL], Philip Powys.  Isabella nee Twysden kept a notebook.

1716 One day after his brother in law, Dr. Merrick, gave him back the mortgage of Hardwick, he remortgaged it to his sister in law, Frances Twysden, spinster [who was living with them and who may have considered this to defray the cost of keeping her; [she died at Hardwick in 1743 - TFPL].

1722 died. He has a monument at Whitchurch above his father's:-
In memory of Richard Lybbe Esq. of Hardwick in the county of Oxon.  A gentleman whose excellent natural talents were improved by a liberal education.  His character was unblemished by any vice.  His virtues (which were many and conspicuous) were heightened and sanctified by an exemplary piety.  d. Dec. 1722 aged 49, leaving issue one daughter, m. to Philip Powys Esq., by whom this stone was erected 1755.

Whitchurch Burial Register:
"1722 Dec 14 (or 24)   LYBB   Richard, Esqre"

His will can be read in Snell's Berkshire Wills.  Despite the mortgages, it shows plenty of property, with manors and land in Whitchurch, Goring, South Stoke, Maple Durham, Chekenden, Chinnor and Adwell, Manor of Little Purley, lands in Tilehurst.  The original will is filed with the Oxon. C.C.
